Many homeowners want to install a garage door opener for ease and convenience. However, this could become a safe project with the proper training and installation experience. Read the manufacturer’s instruction manual carefully before beginning any permanent wiring or power connections.

Start by assembling the rail system, which should come in several pieces that fit together easily. Next, slide the carriage (also called a trolley) over the rail.

    Remove the Existing Door

Installing new garage door openers is a moderately challenging project that can be done in an afternoon with essential tools. Before starting, read the installation manual to confirm all required parts and tools.

Locate the handle that releases the existing motor from the chain rail and pull it firmly. Remove the old opener unit. Install blocking in the ceiling to support the new opener unit if necessary.

    Measure the Door

Before starting, ensure the garage door operates smoothly manually and that the top edge clears the power unit’s carriage tube. Also, be sure the opener is plugged into an outlet.

Next, run a tape measure along the width of your door frame to find the thickness. This measurement will determine how far your carriage can travel up and down the rail.

    Measure the Tracks

Most garage door openers are equipped with light sensors to help prevent the door from hitting anything. If the sensors and control buttons are located where children can easily reach them, you should relocate them to a safe place.

Install blocking on the ceiling where your opener will be mounted. The instructions that came with your opener should have detailed specifications for this. To find more details, click here.

    Measure the Motor

The opener’s instructions should explain adjusting the opening and closing force. Generally, you do this by turning the screws at the front of the opener.

    After adjusting the force:

    1. Mount the carriage tube on the header bracket.
    2. Learn the other end of the assembly against a ladder.
    3. Attach the power unit to the ceiling.

It should be high enough that tall people won’t run into it.

    Measure the Rollers

Most garage door openers require at least seven feet above the garage floor to mount the power unit. If you have less, most garage door operators offer a rail extension kit to make the system work.

Begin by putting together the main assembly. The rail should come in pieces that fit easily together. Next, install blocking on the ceiling where heavy components will be attached. The instructions should provide specifics about the blocking.
