Built in 1949, the Odeillo solar furnace measures 75 x 35 meters and consists of about 10,000 mirrors, or heliostats, arranged in a parabolic arc that can concentrate up to 95 kilowatts of solar heat into a single point.     It is clear that large-scale solar furnaces can be an effective and cost-efficient way to generate power, but as these installations rely on direct sunlight, they require careful placement, preferably in areas with considerable direct sunlight. Ultimately, the success of any solar energy installation is likely to depend on the amount of sunshine it receives over the course of the year.
